Social media usage is one of the most popular online activities. To date, over 3.6 billion people use social media worldwide, a number projected to increase to 4.41 billion by 2025.

Who uses social media?
Social networking is one of the most popular digital activities worldwide and it is constantly increasing. As of January 2020, the global social media usage rate was 49 percent of population. This figure is anticipated to grow as digital markets catch up with other regions, infrastructure development and the availability of cheap mobile devices. Most of social media’s global growth is driven by the increased usage of mobile devices. Eastern Asia topped the global ranking of mobile social networking penetration, followed by established digital powerhouses such as the Americas and Northern Europe.
How much time do people spend on social media?
Social media is an integral part of daily internet usage. On average, internet users spend 144 minutes per day on social media and messaging apps, an increase of half an hour since 2015.
What are the most popular social media platforms?
Facebook was the first social network to surpass one billion registered accounts and currently has approximately 2.5 billion monthly active users, making it the most popular social network worldwide.
In June 2020, the top social media apps in the Apple App Store included mobile messaging apps WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, as well as the ever-popular app version of Facebook.

Social Media experience

Weltec
As part of the "EdTech" team, we created daily posts for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Moodle forums aimed at teachers and students. We produced quality written and graphic content, short videos and animations to promote events, share notices, and information about teaching and learning at WelTec. We measured reach and impact using Google Analytics and local analytics.
Library
As a senior digital librarian, I managed the library website and social media presence, and created and published multimedia content on a regular basis through the library's web presence and social media channels.

Marketing
As part of a wider marketing group, we worked on strategies to guide the development of uniform messaging and visual branding across the polytechnic media channels. We developed in house standards for consistent tone and graphic style and layout.

Social Media documentary

At WelTec, I produced a short documentary about how students use Social Media in school projects. The students were working on the production of a 3D Oculus Rift game called DRifter. They used Facebook as a collaboration tool for the project. Social Media personal campaigns
I use social media daily for networking, news and education, and create pages to test ideas for content and examine analytics and various features of individual social media tools. I am proficient using the Instagram and Facebook business suite and marketing tools.
I continue to develop my skills and conduct regular research into the features and power of social media as a communication tool.
